Deep tissue vs sports massage: which one do you actually need?
People book a massage in Melrose and ask for 'the deep one'. Usually what they need is a little more specific than that. Here is how I think about the difference between deep tissue and sports work, and how to pick.
Deep tissue: slow pressure, chronic holding
Deep tissue work is about sustained, patient pressure into the deeper layers of muscle and fascia. The pace is slow on purpose — tissue does not release because you push harder, it releases because the nervous system decides it is safe to let go.
It suits long-standing tension: the desk-bound neck and shoulders, low back that aches by Thursday, hips that never quite open. Expect an hour of steady work rather than a sequence of quick strokes.
Sports massage: load, recovery and movement
Sports massage is organised around what your body is being asked to do. Before an event it is brisker and more stimulating; after it is flushing, calming and focused on the tissues that took the load.
For runners that usually means calves, hamstrings, glutes and the front of the hip. For cyclists, quads, hip flexors and the thoracic spine. For gym athletes, whatever the current programme is punishing.
Targeted treatment: one complaint, one hour
If you have a specific problem — a jaw that clicks, a shoulder that will not lift overhead, a calf that keeps tightening — a targeted session spends the whole hour there, with assessment, focused release and something simple to do at home.
How to choose
Train regularly and want to keep training? Sports massage. Carrying tension you have had for years? Deep tissue. One clear complaint? Targeted. Not sure? Message me on WhatsApp with what is going on and I will tell you honestly which is the better use of your hour.
